Aerial Spraying for Mosquitoes Resumes Sunday Night

On Sunday evening, October 2, Dare County will resume the aerial spraying program to reduce the number of mosquitoes.

The spraying, which started on Friday, September 30, had to be suspended after several hours due to unsuitable weather conditions.  Sunday night’s spraying is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m., weather permitting, and is expected to continue until the early morning hours of Monday, October 3.  Areas scheduled for spraying on Sunday evening include the beach communities north of Oregon Inlet, Roanoke Island, and Stumpy Point on the Dare County mainland.  Other areas of the County were included Friday evening.

Although a person's chances of experiencing any health effects from spraying are very low, the Dare County Department of Public Health offers the following steps to reduce exposure to pesticides during spraying:
  • Remain indoors when pesticides are sprayed in your immediate area.
  • Bring pets and pet food and water containers inside to avoid direct exposure.
  • Close windows and doors before spraying begins.
  • Wash homegrown fruits and vegetables before eating.
  • Wash exposed skin with soap and water if you come in contact with Dibrom.
  • Should you feel you are experiencing health effects from spraying, please consult your doctor.
For more information, please contact Dare County Department of Public Health at 252-475-5003 or Dare County Public Works at 252-475-5880.
