The Dare County Airport Authority Mission Statement....is to manage the operation, maintenance and improvement of air services and facilities for the use, convenience, and benefit of the Air Traveling Public.  The Authority shall seek to improve the economy, safety and welfare of Dare County.

The Authority shall endeavor to be the leading provider of Airport Services in Eastern North Carolina.

The Dare County Airport Authority (DCAA) is responsible for maintaining and operating airports owned by the Authority or Dare County. They provide air transportation services to the aviation traveling public and other aviation related services.

Members of the Airport Authority are elected by the Dare County Board of Commissioners.  Airport Authority operates under the Bylaws initially adopted on September 22, 1993, and amended on September 29, 2004.

Joint Committee w/ Airport Authority - is made up of the Airport Authority Chair, Vice Chair, and two members of the Dare County Commissioners when appropriate.  They will also handle staff and personnel matters.

George Wood

 

George Wood, served on the Dare County Airport Authority since 2001 and has been the Chairperson of the Facilities Committee and Safety Committee.  Mr. Wood earned his Private Pilot’s Certificate in 1999 and logged most of his hours in a Cessna 182, which he owns in a partnership.  Mr. Wood’s experience of working with private as well as public sector projects is reflected in the high degree of success, particularly in those projects that face difficult challenges.  Mr. Wood has successfully managed over 3,000 projects that required resource identification, assessment, and permit authorizations from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management.  Mr. Wood is a life-long resident of coastal plains North Carolina and received his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science from East Carolina University.  He has 25 years experience in coastal environmental and planning issues working with the State of North Carolina Coastal Management Program and in the private sector as President of Environmental Professionals, Inc. and Decision Support Professionals.


Jack Shea Jack Shea, Managerial / Director positions in Quality Control and Quality Assurance, primarily in the medical products industries for more than 35 years with additional experience in  electronics, defense and aerospace related industries. Since 1987, and until the present, consulting world-wide in pharmaceuticals, biologics, and medical devices.  Currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Bio-delivery Sciences International as Chairman of the Corporate Governance Committee, and as member of Corporate Adult Committee.

Charles Davidson, M.D. Treasure,  has been an authority member for about 10 years. He is an active pilot flying about 120 hours per year. Charles uses the airport for business and personal transportation. He has practiced medicine and has had his aircraft based in Dare County since 1978. He is an FAA appointed senior aviation medical examiner. Charles has sons that are both pilots, having learned to fly at MQI.

Linda Willey Linda Willey,  is a resident of Manteo and was appointed to the Dare County Airport Authority in 2001.  Linda has served as Treasurer and Secretary and on several committees.  She and Connie Brothers co-chaired the 2003 Celebration of Flight Committee that handled logistics for that event at the airport.

Richard Johnson Richard Johnson has served as a Dare County Commissioner since 1997 and is currently Vice-Chairman.  He serves as Chairman of the Albemarle Commission, Chairman of the Dare County Affordable Housing Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Albemarle Mental Health Center Board of Directors, and is also an active member of the Dare County Airport Authority, the College of the Albemarle Board of Trustees, the Dare County Bombing Range Council, the Government Access Channel Committee, the Special Motor Vehicle Valuation Review Board, the Work Force Development Consortium, and the Roanoke Island Historical Association.

Steve Evans,  One of the two new members on board.  Steve graduated from UNC Chapel Hill school of Pharmacy in 1975. He has practiced pharmacy in Dare County since 1976 and is co-owner of Beach Pharmacy of Hatteras & Avon. He has 3 girls ages 19-24 & 25. Steve received his pilots license in 2004.

George Henderson George Henderson Vice Chairman, is a  resident of Manteo and was appointed to the Dare County Airport Authority in the early 70’s.  He has served as Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer.  George has also served on several DCAA committees.

Dave Harden Chairman, Is a retired naval officer and has 21 years in civil aviation experience.  He has management experience with the Navy and Civil Aviation, particularly with the 135 Operation at New Port News with Flight International. 

Dwight Burrus, Secretary, Age 60 from Hatteras Village, married to Deborah from New England. Dwight & Debbie can trace their ancestry back to the two founding villages in America – Jamestown and Plymouth. Dwight served 21 ½ years in the United States Coast Guard Search & Rescue Helo’s on both Coasts, the Gulf Coast and 5 years in Alaska. Together they have flown & managed Burrus Flying Service for 20 years on Hatteras Island. They are dedicated to building God’s kingdom in Dare County thru unity and personal relationships.
