February 17, 2010 THE UNC CANCER SPECIALTY CLINIC is accepting referrals for patients diagnosed with colon or gastrointestinal cancer on Friday, February 26. Appointments may be made by calling (252) 449-8265. The community is invited to hear Bert O’Neil, MD, provide a Lunch and Learn workshop at noon on Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Outer Banks Hospital Cancer Resource Center. It is entitled: “Advances in the Treatment of Colon Cancer.” Pre-registration is encouraged and may be made by calling (252) 475-5903. Bert O’Neil, MD is an associate professor of medicine and co-leader of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center Gastrointestinal Oncology Program. His clinical and research interests are the multidisciplinary care and novel systemic therapy for patients with gastrointestinal malignancies with particular focus on pancreatic cancer, colon/rectal cancer, and primary liver cancer. Dr. O’Neil is principal investigator of a two-year $125,000 grant to support clinical trials in gastrointestinal cancer. Given to UNC Lineberger by Aptium Oncology GI Consortium, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of eight institutions in the US to receive the grant. Additionally, he serves as a co-investigator on the UNC Lineberger Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in gastrointestinal cancers. Dr. O’Neil earned his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of California, Irvine, and his medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University of California, San Francisco.
